When CenSyn Inc. envisioned the PenEEG, they weren’t just creating another medical device; they were setting out to revolutionize key part of emergency neuro diagnostics. Their mission was to make EEG technology accessible and easy to use, empowering first responders and healthcare providers to deliver early diagnosis and treatment right at the point of need. The challenge was to translate this bold vision into a tangible product that felt both timeless and modern.

CenSyn partnered with F8 Products to bring this vision to life. Through detailed analysis and collaborative discussions, we distilled their core principles— accessibility, timelessness, and modernity—into a clear design roadmap. Our goal was to craft a portable EEG device that not only performed its critical function flawlessly but also felt intuitive and reassuring in the hands of a user under pressure.

Key Design Requirements

Our work focused on a series of critical design requirements to ensure the PenEEG was reliable, safe, and easy to use.

  • Electrodes & Feet: The electrodes double as the device’s feet and were designed to be replaceable, economical, and safe for skin. Multiple variants of the Electrodes were carefully designed to be able to make proper skin contact for different hair type of the patient while not hurting the patient. Silicone rubber feet offer a much-needed cushioning for patient comfort.
  • Legs: The structural legs are robust, designed to maintain a flat positioning on the scalp for consistent readings. The internally routed signal line, is shielded from external noise to ensure best quality signals.
  • Main Enclosure: The entire enclosure is built to a high standard of IP65 Ingress Protection, making it resistant to dust and water jets. The enclosures are sturdy enough to address the emergency needs of the clinician

Visual and Tactile Identity

The PenEEG defies the conventional look of an EEG and yet maintains the feel of medical equipment, while seemingly minimal and easy to use. Our design
philosophy was to create a simple, approachable, and highly functional device.

  • A Bold, Minimal Aesthetic: The device has a simple form with colour accentuation on key parts to reflect modernity. Subtle matte textures that
    make it friendly and resistant to the surface wear and tear. It stands out in the market by embracing a design that is both unconventional and
    modern.
  • Intuitive Usability: The PenEEG is designed for intuitive usage, with clear affordances that guide the user. It is built to last and feels comfortable to
    hold, with every detail considered to minimize unintended actions. User interface is intentionally minimal, providing only sufficient information to
    assist with seamless usage. This focus on minimal interface, maximum utility reduces cognitive load in high-stress situations. Device comes with
    wrist wearable tether and pocket hook to enable clinician to be hands free when necessary.
