The Challenge We Identified
Power guzzling equipment at home such as; geysers, room heater, air conditioners need provision to control the power remotely so that, these equipment need not run throughout the day when home is unoccupied. Also, there is a need to control and monitor the power consumption of individual machinery in the factory to assess the operation costs.
However, most consumer do not prefer to automate their electrical system at home / factory due to tedious work involved. Hence, there is a need for a plug-and-play solution to enable controlling and monitoring the power for individual electrical equipment.
The Solution We Designed
GND’s Smartplug is an easy-to-use product that can be plugged into regular power socket to enable controlling & monitoring any home appliances / industrial machinery. With this smart plug one can control load remotely and also monitor all critical power parameters along with total energy consumption.
The Smartplug is designed especially in keeping view of Indian electricity conditions so as to withstand power fluctuations. Smart plug along with our analytics platform ThinxView makes the applications limitless including but not limited to remote load control and understanding the usage patterns of the gadgets to which the plug is attached to.
Design
F8 conducted the research and understood various problems associated with the various plugs. Most plugs are bulky and heavy with centre of gravity away from the wall socket. This results in plug being pulled out when the other equipment is plugged in.
We designed this Smartplug, such that the centre of gravity is close to the wall and highly compact compared to competitor products in the market. In addition, the plug pins are carefully crafted to snugly fit into the wall sockets.
Smartplug is designed to suit the home aesthetic with friendly looks and engineered for great fit and finish. Design meeting all the safety standards required such as, protection from shock hazard, UL94 for protection from flammability, child safety lock etc.
Manufacturing
F8 helped GND Solutions in manufacturing the Smart plug by working with manufacturing partners. We owned the responsibility of visual and dimensional quality inspection of parts and assist in technical matters such as material selection, design refinement for injection moulding, mould corrections after T0 and T1 trials, defining injection parameters and establishing the assembly sequence.
